Cybersecurity insurance for Queensland Government agencies
Agencies participating in the Queensland Government Insurance Fund are covered for damage from cyber events
Most Queensland Government agencies are automatically covered by the Queensland Government Insurance Fund (QGIF) in the event of a cyber security incident.
Despite best efforts, Queensland Government agencies are not immune to information security incidents. The costs associated with recovering from cyber incidents can be substantial, particularly where the agency is responsible for others losses.
QGIFs policy includes cover for cyber-related events which cause loss or damage to the agency's IT systems. It also covers amounts an agency may be liable to pay to third parties because of a cyber event or data breach. The cover provided is included under the Property and General Liability sections of QGIF's policy and include losses such as:
- forensic investigation expenses
- crisis management and public relations expenses
- asset replacement
- response costs to rectify harm
- business interruption
- legal defence costs
- compensation to third parties.
Recommended actions
- Contact QGIF on (07) 3035 6367 or qgif@qgif.qld.gov.au to ensure your agency is covered by the QGIF scheme.
- Ensure relevant agency staff are aware of who your agency's internal QGIF contact is.
- Ensure your incident response process considers early notification of breaches to QGIF and potential for making a QGIF claim.
If your agency suffers a cyber incident resulting in a loss that may be claimable, notify QGIF as soon as practicable.
