Employer Value Proposition
Working in procurement or contract management with the Queensland Government means more than just securing goods and services—it’s an opportunity to shape positive outcomes for communities across the state.
The Queensland Procurement Approach, as outlined in the Queensland Procurement Policy, is built upon the following five foundational pillars, designed to optimise the Queensland Government’s procurement practices:
- Value for Money: Deliver value for taxpayers’ money and ensure fair and open competition.
- Local opportunities: Create opportunities for local suppliers, with an emphasis on small and family businesses and regional enterprises, wherever practical.
- Easy to do Business: Simplify procurement processes to make it easier for suppliers to do business with government.
- Open to new ideas: Encourage innovation and new market driven approaches to solve challenges faced by government.
- Practical economic, environmental and social impact: Drive sustainable procurement practices and build a diverse supplier base including support for social enterprises and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses.
A career in procurement enables you to:
- deliver the projects and services Queenslanders deserve, whilst respecting taxpayer’s money.
- build better communities, foster new and better ways of doing things, and grow our state’s economy.
Applying for roles
Entry to the profession can occur through:
- Entry level roles (external to government applicant):
- through a graduate program
- through securing an entry level role advertised on Smart Jobs and Careers.
- Lateral transfer into profession (external to government applicant):
- through securing a role advertised at any level where you draw on relevant transferable skills and expertise (commercial law, business law, contract law, business acumen, contract management, etc.).
- On the job experience (internal-to-government applicant) - through being selected via an expression of interest or secondment process.
Vocational training
There are four vocational qualifications that would support a school leaver or adult learner seeking a career change to secure a job in procurement and contract management:
- Certificate IV in Procurement and Contacting
- Diploma in Procurement and Contacting
- Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Contacting
- Graduate Certificate in Strategic Procurement.
There are a number of Registered Training Organisations offering these courses, with UQ Skills (RTO #1511) being the sole provider for Queensland Government to deliver the Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses as part of the Procurement Certification Program (PCP). Members of the public can enrol in PCP courses.
