Entry level cyber training
The Queensland Government Cyber Security Unit provides entry level training to help you develop your cyber skills through partially funded course fees.
There are 3 sequential courses available to help you build your skills and progress in the cyber field.
About the program
This program offers a practical introduction to a cyber career, focusing on essential IT skills and procedures for hardware and software installations, upgrades and troubleshooting.
This course is a prerequisite for Certificate IV Cyber Security.
Time commitment
Duration: 14 weeks
Class time: 3 hours every Wednesday from 6-9pm
Study: 3 hours in personal time
Who can enrol
This course is designed for employees with minimum IT skills or those needing an IT refresh.

About the program
This course will build and further develop your IT skills and knowledge for entry level cyber operational roles and is delivered by TAFE Queensland.
There are 2 study options for the program with TAFE:
- online only
- hybrid of online and in person.
Cost
- Free for eligible applicants under Fee-Free TAFE.
- Negotiated cost with Queensland Government Cyber Security Unit for other applicants.
Online program
Who can enrol
To be eligible for the Certificate IV in Cyber Security Program , you must be:
- An IT regional Queensland Government or council employee
or - Have IT studies or work experience.
Time commitment
Duration: 18 months
Study: Attend 2 evening online classes for 3 hours each week plus approximately 10 hours of self-motivated study.
Hybrid program
Who can enrol
Enrol in this course if you have completed the IT Essentials Bridging Program or have foundational IT skills.
The program is designed for:
- level 1 IT support staff
- staff who are looking to build on their IT background and take up a role in cyber security
- non-IT staff pursuing a career in cyber security.
Time commitment
Duration: 12 months
In person class time: 1 day at TAFE Queensland South Bank campus
Online class time: 2 evening classes per week lasting 1.5 hours each Study: approximately 10 hours per week of self-motivated study
About the program
The Cyber Security Mobility Program, hosted by the Queensland Government Cyber Security Unit, helps Certificate IV Cyber Security alumni gain practical, on-the-job experience in cyber security.
This can include exposure to a range of cyber activities, such as security operations centre duties, DMARC and cyber exercising.
Who can apply
Certificate IV Cyber Security alumni will be invited to express their interest when positions are available and be matched with appropriate job experiences identified by Queensland Government departments. The next intake for this program is early 2025.
