Show your support for Privacy Awareness Week 2025

Queensland will celebrate Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) from 16-22 June 2025. The annual celebration brings the community and public sector agencies together to shine a light on the importance of protecting and respecting personal information.

This year’s theme is ‘Privacy: it’s everyone’s business’. It highlights that both the community and public sector (from the top to the bottom) must take privacy seriously. After all, it’s everyone’s business.

Every year Queenslanders are becoming more interested and invested in their personal privacy and the value of their personal information, given the digital world we live in. The community is also expecting agencies to be doing everything they can to protect their personal information.

During PAW it’s a great time for a refresher in how to protect personal information, and it also gives us a timely reminder about the importance of privacy rights and the consequences when privacy is breached.

In Queensland, the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) runs an awareness campaign each year to help educate the community and public sector agencies about protecting personal information and privacy rights.

Queenslanders’ personal information must be protected and now, more than ever, the public sector needs to ensure they’re getting it right, because it helps build and maintain community trust.

When it comes to privacy, Queensland is entering an exciting new era with changes coming into effect from 1 July 2025 under the IPOLA Act. These changes will improve transparency and accountability of agencies and strengthen privacy protections for the community. This includes a mandatory notification of data breach scheme (MNDB), which will start for most agencies on 1 July 2025 and greater consistency with the Commonwealth Privacy Act.

Working for the public sector in Queensland, everyone has a role to play. This includes respecting privacy rights, upholding privacy values and fostering a ‘privacy aware’ work culture.
