Legislation proclaimed to strengthen Queensland's emergency response.

Today marks a pivotal moment in Queensland's emergency preparedness as the state's most significant disaster and emergency management reforms occur. With the Emergency Services Reform Amendment Act 2024 proclamation, Queensland is fortified to tackle fires, disasters, and emergencies with increased resilience and capability.

So, what does this mean? When a bill is proclaimed, it advances from being proposed legislation to becoming an Act of Parliament. After the bill has gone through all three reading stages in  Parliament and has received Royal Assent from the Governor, it becomes an Act. The assent is announced by proclamation in the Government Gazette, specifying the date the Act will take effect. Click here for more information about how laws are made in Queensland.

This legislation represents a monumental step forward for Queensland's emergency services and disaster management framework. By establishing Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) as a state-wide marine rescue service and transitioning the State Emergency Service (SES), the Queensland Government is laying the foundation for a more responsive and efficient emergency apparatus.

Under the Emergency Services Reform Amendment Act 2024, both MRQ and SES will be integrated into the Queensland Police Service (QPS). This strategic move streamlines coordination and resource allocation, ensuring a more efficient and effective emergency response system. These two entities will be hosted within the QPS, with their own chain of command, budget, and corporate support.

This legislation recognises the contribution of our emergency services staff and volunteers and provides support for their crucial work. With boosted resources and equipment, we empower our volunteers to continue serving their communities with distinction.

Through educational campaigns and targeted communications, SES and MRQ staff and volunteers will be engaged on an ongoing basis. Together, we'll ensure a seamless transition and foster a culture of preparedness and collaboration.

As this legislation takes effect, Queensland is not just better equipped, but also more united than ever to face the challenges of the future. We're building a safer and more resilient Queensland for all, with a strengthened emergency response framework and an unwavering commitment to community safety, supported by the contribution of our emergency services staff and volunteers.
